The Embedded AI That Makes Swiss Robots Walk

21 October 2026

When Intelligence Moves Into the Machine

Switzerland builds robots that go where humans cannot — or should not — go. Their common trait: an embedded AI, on board, that perceives, decides and acts in real time, without waiting for an order. Two recent examples show it well.

ANYbotics: a Four-Legged Robot That Inspects on Its Own

A spin-off of ETH Zürich (2016), ANYbotics built ANYmal, a four-legged robot for autonomous industrial inspection. Packed with sensors — optical, microphones, gas detectors, thermal camera — it roams difficult sites alone: refineries, mines, energy plants. The embedded AI handles locomotion over rough terrain, navigation and inspection. More than two hundred of these robots are already in service. Here, intelligence serves to walk and see where it is dangerous.

Flyability: a Drone That Enters the Inaccessible

Born at EPFL and based in Lausanne, Flyability makes the Elios, a collision-resilient drone, protected by a cage, designed for confined spaces: tanks, boilers, chimneys, ducts. With LiDAR and real-time 3D mapping, it surveys and models what the human eye cannot reach without risk. Its embedded AI serves to fly and map in the dark and the narrow.

And Sophyia: the Intelligence That Decides, Not the One That Moves

These robots embody one form of AI: embedded, physical, acting on the world. Sophyia works the other end of the chain — not making a machine move, but making it decide well. A Swiss company too, Sophyia orchestrates several models that debate before answering, to produce a reliable, auditable decision. Where embedded AI gives a robot eyes and legs, Sophyia would give it a board of directors: several intelligences that contradict one another before ruling.

Two faces of the same Swiss ambition: an AI you can trust — whether it walks through a refinery, or settles a decision that matters.
