Sophia, Sophyia, SOPHiA: Making Sense of AI's Many "Sophias"
One Name, Several Intelligences
Type "Sophia" and artificial intelligence answers in several voices. There is the robot, of course. But also a Swiss medical tool listed in New York, a Bern-based chatbot awarded by the United Nations — and us. Let's sort them out, because these names cover projects with nothing in common, and that's good news: each one throws light, by contrast, on what the others actually do.
Sophia, the Robot (Hong Kong)
The most famous. Built by Hanson Robotics, face inspired by Audrey Hepburn, the first robot granted "citizenship" (Saudi Arabia, 2017). A feat of expressive robotics, often carried by pre-written answers — not general intelligence, as its own chief scientist acknowledged. Sophia gives AI a face.
SOPHiA GENETICS (Vaud, Nasdaq: SOPH)
Nothing to do with a robot. SOPHiA GENETICS, a Swiss company founded in 2011 in canton Vaud and listed on the Nasdaq, applies AI to precision medicine. Its SOPHiA DDM platform analyses clinical, biological and genomic data — over 1.2 million genomic profiles processed, for hundreds of hospitals and laboratories. Here, AI serves to read the living.
The "Sophia" Chatbot (Spring ACT, Bern)
Another "Sophia," another mission. The Swiss non-profit Spring ACT (Bern) created a chatbot named Sophia to help, anonymously, survivors of domestic violence recognise the signs of abuse, understand their rights and seek help. It received the United Nations "AI for Good Impact Award 2025", announced in Geneva. AI in the service of protection.
And Sophyia — with a y
Us, it's the spelling with a y that sets us apart. Sophyia is a Swiss company building neither a face, nor a single tool, nor a single assistant: an orchestration platform where several intelligences debate before answering. Where the others each excel in one domain, Sophyia works on the way a decision is made — making several models oppose one another to produce a reliable, auditable answer that can say "I don't know."
So keep the simple landmark: the robot has a face, SOPHiA reads genes, the chatbot protects — and Sophyia, with a y, makes the intelligences debate. Four projects, one thing in common: the start of a name. For the rest, everything sets them apart.
